Types of Attraction

Written by Jeb_CC

Attraction can be complicated. I'm writing this in hopes of helping others figure out what they're feeling. As a reminder, there is no pressure to fit yourself into a label if it doesn't match your experiences. Make your own molds if you would like, be yourself.Below is a list of variables with provided descriptions on what exactly they mean. Going further, there is a table that details what type of attraction exhibits what variables. It's important to note that these variables are a general guide only. It doesn't fully define each type of attraction, as everyone's experience is a little bit different! For example, a Queerplatonic relationship for you may involve sleeping together, but for another QP relationship it may not. The difference between a Queerplatonic and Platonic relationship is that it may be expected/normal for a QP attraction to desire sleeping together, whereas for a platonic attraction it is unexpected/unusual to desire. As a general key...βœ… = Applies, is socially acceptable, or often expected of that attraction
❌ = Does not apply, is not socially acceptable, or not expected of that attraction
πŸ”„ = May apply. Is socially acceptable, but not a core aspect of that attraction and only applies to some individuals.

Interact - Interacts with in a way that can be reciprocated or acknowledged, such as touching, or talking. In comparison, aesthetic attraction is not interactive.

One cat patting another cat on the head.

Touch - A less intense form of intimacy. It is typically shorter, and involves hugging, affirming pats, or soft forms of cleaning another such as brushing.

Two cats cuddling another, their curled tails form the shape of a love heart.

Intimate (Touch) - A more intense form of touching. It is typically longer, and involves kissing, cuddling, stroking, massaging, or holding hands. It is not inherently sexual.

Favour - Favouring an individual over others including family and friends. This can come in the form of time, money, gifts, touch, or more. Either way, you give them more of it.

A dog with a newspaper in its jaws.

Homely - An individual you'd desire to live with in a homely setting. This involves partaking in cleaning, sleeping with/close to another, tending, and cooking for the other.

Commit - An individual you'd ideally like to spend the majority of your life with in closeness.

Other attractions a bit too unique for the above table:
- Invidious
- Nebulous
- Idyllic
- Exteramo

Aesthetic
a swish

The attraction to how someone looks/appears - including physical features, such as their curves and shape, their bearing, how they move, how they dress, etc. It involves having a desire to observe someone, and is a feeling similar to the admiration of a painting. There is no touch involved.

Alterous
a mesh / hush

A broad spectrum of attraction that sits between platonic and romantic attraction. Many other attractions may fit under this umbrella.

Amical
a shush / thresh

Sometimes referred to as a "best friendship", involves the desire for a siblinghood like bond that is more intense than a standard platonic attraction. This friendship may be favoured over others, and may involve more touching, but is strictly nonsexual.

Cedural
a gush / sush

An attraction for a protective individual, involving a relationship (guardianship) of tutoring, protection, safety, and general support. Attraction may include feeling weak that is expelled upon interaction with their partner (guardian).

Exteramo
an orush

An ambiguous umbrella attraction that sits outside of platonic and romantic attraction.

Familial

The desire for emotional closeness with another by virtue of them being family. A familial relationship can refer to their blood-related family, but it can also be with an individual that provides emotional closeness in a way that that mimics a traditionally/idealized familial bond. This relationship may be seen as a chosen family.

Idyllic

When one desires, fantasizes about, or wishes they were attracted to a certain gender despite not being attracted to that gender in real life. This can be any desired form of attraction.

Invidious

A feeling of envious attraction towards an individual’s appearance or presentation. It is generally rooted in envy or a desire to have a similar appearance or presentation. This involves a desire to observe, interact with, or fantasize. It is not inherently hostile or resentful feeling, and instead is based upon a desire to appear or present similarly to the target individual. It may be characterized by discontent/dysphoria or desire/euphoria.

Mental
^a mish^

A desire to form an intellectual bond with an individual, wishing to exchange wisdom, knowledge and interests. Similar to social attraction but on a deeper level that can potentially be favoured over other relationships.

Nebulous

An umbrella attraction for any/all non-sexual attraction, particularly for those that find it difficult to distinguish types of attraction.

Parental
^a prush^

The attraction to someone with the desire to raise a child. It is a subtype of familial attraction, usually with the addition of long term commitment. This kind of attraction can sometimes be encompassed by other attractions such as romantic, but is not always. It is not dependent on other attractions, as one can raise a child with someone they are not romantically/sexually attracted to. This can also involve the act of adopting.

Platonic
a squish

The desire to form a friendship with a specific individual, or to form a closer friendship with someone one already knows. It may go beyond casual friendship and revolve around a willingness to engage in a very deep symbiotic friendship. The attraction may desire a closeness and urge to share interests and personal details. Generally touching in platonic relationships is limited to hand holding and hugs.

Psuedosexual

An attraction which mimics or borders on sexual attraction. The core difference is that this attraction holds no desire to touch/partake in physical interaction, and is more influenced by libido and arousal which can be commonly mistaken as sexual attraction. Psuedosexual attraction can be seen as a mix of Aesthetic and Sexual attraction.

Queerplatonic
^a plush / squash^

A more intense extension of platonic attraction. Typically involves similar feelings as platonic attraction but desires the commitment level of a romantic relationship. A queerplatonic partner can be referred to as a Mallowfriend.

Romantic
^a crush^

A desire for a deep relationship that involves being physically close, affectionate speech, living together, making lifelong commitment decisions, doing things together exclusively, and valuing the relationship more than others. It is commonly based on or enhanced by non-physical aspects of a individual (such as similarity in interests and personality). Romantic attraction may commonly coincide with other forms of attraction such as sensual, sexual, or parental attraction.

Sensual
a lush

Physical attraction to another individual involving the sense of touch. It is simply the interest in nonsexual forms of touch such as cuddling, kissing, or massaging. This can be accompanied by other types of attraction but doesn't have to be.

Sexual
a lust / smush

Physical attraction to an individual based on the desire for sexual interaction (sexual intercourse, sexually touching/groping, etc). Can be caused by or enhanced by things such as the physical qualities, clothing, movements, voice, or other qualities of a individual. It may commonly coincide with other forms of attraction such as romantic attraction, or sensual attraction. Simply put, sexual attraction is a desire for sexual interaction with someone.

Social^a rush^

Defined as β€œaspirational” or mentor-attractional desire to be closer to or more like another because of their personality, benefit, or expertise. It is often driven by human social instinct, attraction to those alike or potentially helpful. Social attraction can often lead to the creation of social groups, or possible platonic attraction.

Tutelary
^a mush^

A strong desire to take care, protect, and support a certain person. Felt strongly when seeing the source of attraction in a sad or defenseless situation. It is not just a feeling of sympathy but also a sense of attraction that persuades involvement with that person and their needs. This is the attraction one might feel towards a child, younger sibling, a pet, or other vulnerable individual.
